Main duties and responsibilities

  • Creating and implementing the communications strategy
  • Establishing and maintaining positive awareness of safety camera project

  • Creating and managing budgets (£178,000 for 06-07)
  • Developing and maintaining effective communications with key target audiences/stakeholders
  • Researching and writing press releases and other promotional material
  • Production of brochures, posters, radio advertisements, bus back advertising and corporate CD ROM presentations.

  • Interacting with other road safety organisations, locally and nationally

Self Employed (1992 -2003)

Self employed consultant in the PR, Internet and mobile communications field. Also carried out journalistic assignments for the European Commission.

For four years he was a self-employed consultant working on a European Commission sponsored project as part of the Telematics Application Programme. The project was to create and implement electronic dissemination techniques using new Internet-based technologies and to advise SMEs (Small To medium Sized Enterprises) how to integrate these into their communications, sales and marketing strategies.

Methods used included:

  • WWW site design and maintenance
  • On-line electronic newsletters
  • Electronic messaging techniques and webcasting.

The latter was when our project team transmitted live events over the Internet so people throughout the world could see the conference, as it occurred, on their desktop PCs. Underpinning the above responsibilities was the need to provide an on-line help and support function for individuals and multi-national projects.

Two key sub-projects were the European Commission sponsored G7 Electronic Commerce Best Practice Guide web site and the design and maintenance of the web site for European Telework Week, a high-profile event which acted as a focus for teleworking and other new ways of working.

Ad hoc clients during this period have included The Virtual Office, Global Office Network, Martech International (Belgium), ANS France, Predictive UK Ltd and Netquotient.

Prior to that, he worked as a self-employed marketing communications consultant for three years with such clients as British Coal Information Technology, Compower, Computer Graphics Suppliers Association, Document Management Suppliers Association, and European Electronic Messaging Association.

Joined as PR manager to build up public relations unit of well known regional advertising and design agency and given directorship after six months. Clients included Land Rover, The Black Country Development Corporation, South Staffordshire Health Authority, Evostik.

1988 - 1990 - Group Public Relations, London

Senior Account Director with consultancy well known for its long term strategic planning. Clients included British Direct Mail Association, The Galvanisers Association, Air Call Cellular, Maxell Tapes.

1984 - 1988 - Taylor Nelson

Public Relations Manager for Taylor Nelson, a market research company, with food and drink, homecare, agriculture, financial, medical and strategic forecasting specialist divisions. Responsible for all PR activity, organising of conferences, seminars, special events, etc.

1981 - 1984 - Garnett Keeler Public Relations

Joined as Account Manager and after 18 months made a board director. Key accounts were Reliance Mutual Insurance, The Wellcome Foundation Veterinary and Agricultural Division, Coopers Animal health, Iveco Ford, Harvey Fork Lift Trucks, Craven Tasker HGV running gear, Wellcome Foundation Health Division.

Journalistic career 1969-81

Started as a junior reporter with the Cheshire Observer Series, going through formal indenture period and NCTJ training. After four years left to become Chief Reporter with part of the Liverpool Daily Post & Echo Group, later transferring to central subs unit to learn sub-editing and newspaper design skills.

Moved as Chief Reporter to Shropshire Weekly Newspapers, part of the Wolverhampton Express & Star Group, running three county-based newspapers and main group agricultural coverage.

Left Shropshire to become Production Editor of Music Week, a music industry management magazine and, after two years, joined Men's Wear as Deputy Editor.
